I just thought that I would let everyone know that we now have a woodpecker in one of the trees around the house.

I just thought that I would let everyone know that we now have a woodpecker in one of the trees around the house. This is the first time that I have heard a woodpecker for a good few years around here. How common is the woodpecker where you live? Does the noise irritate you or are you in some way comforted (like me) by the sound?

Hi Joel, Yes we have a woodpecker too, maybe more than 1 even. It is the first time I have ever heard one around where we live. Personally I love the sound especially first thing in the morning mixed in with all the other birdsong. Are they unusual birds??

Good evening Nikki,
The Great Spotted Woodpecker, which is the one I have here, is the commonest woodpecker throughout Britain (but not in Ireland). The following link should interest you should you want to read further about the woodpecker.

Happy reading!

We also have woodpeckers – to encourage them i’ve put a large branch in the garden, drilled holes in it and put in peanuts. They love getting them out.

I buy my peanuts from gardenbird.com – they are a very good supplier

Hi Paul,
Yes gardenbird.com is probably the best supplier of bird feed in the country! I like them very much indeed.
Thanks for your recommendation.
