Coming from a professional growing background as opposed to a traditional gardening one I have a question that I get asked a lot that I would like your comments on: When is the best time of day to water your plants?
When working in a glasshouse environment I used to like my growing team to try and understand what the days weather was going to do before giving the plants a good soaking or not.
If at all possible, especially in late winter to early spring, I have to say that I would water in the glasshouses at 9am at the earliest. Now this is where the the issue is because most of you will be at work by the time I would recommend watering, so do you water very early in the day or do you go for it in the evening? There are defiantely two schools of thought. Water prior to the heat of the day or give them a re-invigorating drink at the end of the day to take them through the next as well.
I’ll let you decide on this, send in your answers…...
I guess if I was planting my garden I would go for drought resistant plants such as Buddleia, Geranium, Lavender and Cordyline. This way I wouldn’t have to worry too much about the age old debate and I could get on with cutting the lawn or lighting the BBQ.
Happy hoeing!
