I think we can reasonably expect to see an outbreak of patriotic red, white and blue planting in the UK’s gardens this year. And “why not”?, I ask, with the Diamond Jubilee of HM The Queen to celebrate and the whole country getting behind our Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

I like to describe myself as a keen gardener but what I really mean is that I love gardening when the weather is fine. From Spring to Autumn I can spend hours outside, planting, weeding or just enjoying the results of my hard work. However, as the days shorten and the weather declines you’re more likely to find gazing guiltily through the window, mug of tea in hand, at the shrivelling plants and piles of leaves that need to be dealt with.

First things first. The buds on my miniature kiwi have broken and starting to grow away. The dreaded snow didn’t arrive (as you can tell I am writing this somewhat belatedly on the 5th February) disappointing the family who like a little bit of the white stuff provided it doesn’t disrupt any planned activities or travel or stay around too long. Just enough to go ooh doesn’t that look nice. So here we are basking in the pale winter sunshine desperately trying to think of something to write or whether to go to and walk the dog instead.
